This series appears to have been initially engraved on much larger plates, which were then cut down for printing and binding in the volumes, then tweaked and reprinted and sold as “proofs” on larger paper sheets. There may even have been multiple plates to cope with the wear of long print runs, but I haven’t seen enough copies to clarify. An extended series of states can be see under the entry for R.317a.
