The essential support of Research Software Engineers Anja Le Blanc, Louise Lever, Joshua Woodcock, Ian Hinder and James Sinnott (who finally pulled it all together) and the use of the Research Virtual Machine platform in Research IT at The University of Manchester is gratefully acknowledged. They in turn are building on the rapid development of tools created by many groups for sharing digital information efficiently over the internet.

This site became worthwhile only when the British Museum and the Yale Center for British Art led the way by making high quality images of their extensive collections freely available online. Images and data of other institutions are also included.

In parallel, progressive digitisation of newspapers, journals and text books have enabled the exploration of the contemporary publication announcements and discussion from the late eighteenth into the nineteenth century. The major providers of freely accessible texts are the HathiTrust, Google Books and the Internet Archive. Most of the digitised newspapers are available from Gale through library membership. Access to the considerable virtual holdings of the University of Manchester have been essential in exploring these resources. I am grateful to the British Library for permission to use transcripts from their holdings, and for their help in consulting books after the events of both Covid and a major hack.

The images are scanned from impressions held in private and public collections. The image database could not have been prepared without considerable help and access from Hilary Gerrish, Naome Glanville (Special Collections, University of Exeter), Anna Magliaro (Yale Center for British Art), Ella Ravilious (Victoria and Albert Museum), and staff at other institutions who have kindly joined in the effort to make their collections more widely available.
