This developing site gathers diverse and scattered information about Turner’s prints into an open and accessible format. It aims to make the internal resources of public and private collections worldwide, available worldwide to those studying and collecting his prints. It has been a long term aim of scholars to assemble a complete collection of Turner’s prints in all states. This is becoming possible, virtually - thus enabling the study not only of Turner’s process, but also of the growth of printing, commercialisation, dissemination of print media etc.

Recent advances in digital technologies are changing what collaboration can be carried out and how it can be achieved. It is possible to capture high resolution images of complete objects, large and small. Now, these very large files can be shared across the internet, depending only on the ability and willingness of the owners to make the files available. The achievement of sharing digital images of art was preceded by libraries freely sharing digital versions of texts from their holdings. The relevant texts are therefore available from the images online.

Two major institutions have led the way in sharing their art on line. The British Museum and the Yale Collection of British Art have been assiduous in making high quality images of their print collections available on their websites. Other institutions are following these leads and, coming later, are able to use newer technology to capture higher resolution images. As their images become available, we aim to add them to the site’s resources.

Although these institutions have significant collections, there are many impressions missing, particularly from later republications. Private collectors have been generous in making their impressions available for inclusion, by scanning at high resolution.

Each collection, private and public, has its strengths, which combined together are creating an excellent overview of Turner’s output. We welcome cooperation and offers of further suitable images from other collections. Please contact us through the button below.
